SpaceFlights.us: 🎬 ”War of the Worlds” (1953)
Posted in: News | by Brian Taylor | 2024 Nov 15
Dr. Clayton Forrester
Eugene Klass chose his professional name, Gene Barry, in honor of John Barrymore. In 1951, Barry was hired for his first movie, in the role of Dr. Frank Addison in ”The Atomic City” (1952), and then in 1953, Barry was cast as Dr. Clayton Forrester in the science fiction film ”The War of the Worlds.” He later admitted that acting in the film was was very trying, since he never saw the Martian ships while filming his scenes and had to react blindly to special effects shots that were added later.

Filming was halted briefly, two days into filming, when Paramount discovered that its filming rights of the novel were only for a silent version. It was quickly resolved through the kind permission of H.G. Wells' estate. Much later, Barry also made a cameo appearance in Steven Spielberg's remake of ”War of the Worlds” (2005), along with his co-star Ann Robinson from the film of 1953.

An ordained rabbi, Barry met his wife, Betty Barry (her stage name was Julie Carson) during rehearsals of the 1944 Broadway show ”Catherine Was Great.” Betty was fired before opening night because she was a blonde and Mae West, the star, would not have competing blondes in her show. Betty had disguised her hair color with a dark black wig. (IMDb/Wikipedia)

Happy Birthday, Gene Barry!
